‘A Common Word’ in the News

Let the voice of moderation thrive

In a time when extremism has taken on many forms and colours, it is important that inter-faith dialogue is established, maintained and supported. A two-way communication would not only build bridges, but would also assist in keeping extremism at bay.

A group of Muslim scholars recently sent Christmas greetings to Christians around the world. The message called for peace on Earth. “May the coming year be one in which the sanctity and dignity of human life is upheld by all,” it stated. It had also thanked church leaders who have responded to their previous invitation for dialogue.

The gesture once again highlights a first step being initiated by Muslims to construct an atmosphere for reconciliation between the two religions.

It is crucial now that the steps taken by Muslim scholars are reciprocated and taken further. Voices of moderation should always be backed up and encouraged to thrive.
