Your Majesties, Your Excellencies, Dear Brother Bishops, Dear Friends,

It is with joy that I greet all of you here present, as I begin my first visit to the Middle East since my election to the Apostolic See, and I am pleased to set foot upon the soil of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a land so rich in history, home to so many ancient civilizations, and deeply imbued with religious significance for Jews, Christians and Muslims. I thank His Majesty King Abdullah II for his kind words of welcome, and I offer my particular congratulations in this year that marks the tenth anniversary of his accession to the throne. In greeting His Majesty, I extend heartfelt good wishes to all members of the Royal Family and the Government, and to all the people of the Kingdom. I greet His Beatitude Fouad Twal and His Beatitude Theophilus III and also other Patriarchs and Bishops here present, especially those with pastoral responsibilities in Jordan.I look forward to celebrating the liturgy at Saint George’s Cathedral tomorrow evening and at the International Stadium on Sunday together with you, dear Bishops, and so many of the faithful entrusted to your care.

I come to Jordan as a pilgrim, to venerate holy places that have played such an important part in some of the key events of Biblical history. At Mount Nebo, Moses led his people to within sight of the land that would become their home, and here he died and was laid to rest. At Bethany beyond the Jordan, John the Baptist preached and bore witness to Jesus, whom he baptized in the waters of the river that gives this land its name. In the coming days I shall visit both these holy places, and I shall have the joy of blessing the foundation stones of churches that are to be built at the traditional site of the Lord’s Baptism. The opportunity that Jordan’s Catholic community enjoys to build public places of worship is a sign of this country’s respect for religion, and on their behalf I want to say how much this openness is appreciated. Religious freedom is, of course, a fundamental human right, and it is my fervent hope and prayer that respect for all the inalienable rights and the dignity of every man and woman will come to be increasingly affirmed and defended, not only throughout the Middle East, but in every part of the world.

My visit to Jordan gives me a welcome opportunity to speak of my deep respect for the Muslim community, and to pay tribute to the leadership shown by His Majesty the King in promoting a better understanding of the virtues proclaimed by Islam. Now that some years have passed since the publication of the Amman Message and the Amman Interfaith Message, we can say that these worthy initiatives have achieved much good in furthering an alliance of civilizations between the West and the Muslim world, confounding the predictions of those who consider violence and conflict inevitable. Indeed the Kingdom of Jordan has long been at the forefront of initiatives to promote peace in the Middle East and throughout the world, encouraging inter-religious dialogue, supporting efforts to find a just solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, welcoming refugees from neighboring Iraq, and seeking to curb extremism. I cannot let this opportunity pass without calling to mind the pioneering efforts for peace in the region made by the late King Hussein. How fitting that my meeting tomorrow with Muslim religious leaders, the diplomatic corps and University rectors should take place in the mosque that bears his name. May his commitment to the resolution of the region’s conflicts continue to bear fruit in efforts to promote lasting peace and true justice for all who live in the Middle East.

Dear Friends, at the Seminar held in Rome last autumn by the Catholic-Muslim Forum, the participants examined the central role played in our respective religious traditions by the commandment of love. I hope very much that this visit, and indeed all the initiatives designed to foster good relations between Christians and Muslims, will help us to grow in love for the Almighty and Merciful God, and in fraternal love for one another. Thank you for your welcome. Thank you for your attention. May God grant Your Majesties happiness and long life! May he bless Jordan with prosperity and peace!

Majestés, Excellences, Chers frères Evêques, Chers amis,

C’est avec joie que je vous salue, vous tous ici présents, au moment où je commence ma première visite au Moyen-Orient depuis mon élection au Siège apostolique, et je suis heureux de fouler le sol du royaume hachémite de Jordanie, un pays si riche en histoire, berceau de nombreuses civilisations anciennes, et profondément imprégné de signification religieuse pour les Juifs, les Chrétiens et les Musulmans. Je remercie Sa Majesté le Roi Abdallah II pour ses aimables paroles de bienvenue et, en cette année qui marque le dixième anniversaire de son accession au trône, je lui présente mes sincères félicitations. Saluant Sa Majesté, j’étends mes vœux chaleureux à tous les membres de la famille royale, au Gouvernement ainsi qu’à l’ensemble du peuple du Royaume. Je salue Sa Béatitude le Patriarche Fouad Twal, Sa Béatitude le Patriarche Théophilos III et tous les Patriarches et les Evêques ici présents, spécialement ceux qui ont des responsabilités pastorales en Jordanie. J’attends avec joie le moment de célébrer avec vous, chers Évêques, et avec de nombreux fidèles confiés à votre sollicitude la liturgie demain soir à la Cathédrale Saint Georges et dimanche au stade international.

Je viens en Jordanie comme un pèlerin pour vénérer les lieux saints où se sont déroulés une partie importante de certains événements clefs de l’histoire biblique. Au Mont Nébo, Moïse a conduit son peuple en ce point d’où il pouvait découvrir la terre qui deviendrait sa patrie ; il y est mort et y fut enterré. A Béthanie, sur l’autre rive du Jourdain, Jean le Baptiste a prêché, et il a témoigné de Jésus et il l’a baptisé dans les eaux de ce fleuve qui donne son nom à votre pays. Dans les prochains jours, je vais visiter ces deux lieux saints et j’aurai la joie de bénir les premières pierres des églises qui seront construites sur le site traditionnel du Baptême de Notre-Seigneur. La possibilité qu’a la communauté catholique jordanienne de construire des édifices publics de culte est un signe du respect de votre pays pour la religion, et en son nom, je veux dire combien cette ouverture est appréciée. La liberté religieuse est, naturellement, un droit humain fondamental, et mon espérance fervente et ma prière sont que le respect des droits inaliénables et de la dignité de chaque homme et femme soit toujours plus affirmés et défendus, non seulement au Moyen-Orient mais partout dans le monde.

Ma visite en Jordanie me donne l’heureuse occasion de dire mon profond respect pour la communauté musulmane, et de rendre hommage au rôle déterminant de Sa Majesté le Roi dans la promotion d’une meilleure compréhension des vertus proclamées par l’Islam. Alors que maintenant plusieurs années ont passé depuis la publication du Message d’Amman et du Message interreligieux d’Amman, nous pouvons dire que ces précieuses initiatives ont obtenues de bons résultats en favorisant la promotion d’une alliance des civilisations entre l’Occident et le Monde musulman, mettant en échec les prédictions de ceux qui considèrent inévitables la violence et les conflits. En effet, le Royaume de Jordanie a été depuis longtemps à l’avant-garde d’initiatives en faveur de la paix au Moyen-Orient et à travers le monde, en encourageant le dialogue interreligieux et en soutenant les efforts qui visent à une juste solution au conflit israëlo-palestinien, en accueillant des réfugiés provenant de l’Irak voisin, et en cherchant à réduire les extrémismes. Je ne peux pas ne pas saisir cette occasion pour rappeler les efforts en faveur de la paix en cette région que feu le Roi Hussein a déployé en véritable pionnier. Que ma rencontre de demain avec les responsables religieux musulmans, avec le Corps diplomatique et avec les Recteurs d’université ait lieu dans la Mosquée qui porte son nom, est hautement symbolique. Puisse son engagement pour la résolution des conflits de la région continuer à porter des fruits visant à promouvoir la paix désirée et la vraie justice pour tous ceux qui vivent au Moyen-Orient.

Chers amis, lors du Séminaire qui s’est tenu à Rome l’automne dernier à l’initiative du Forum catholico-musulman, les participants ont examiné le rôle central joué dans nos traditions religieuses respectives par le commandement de l’amour. J’espère vivement que ma visite et naturellement toutes les initiatives qui visent à favoriser les bonnes relations entre Chrétiens et Musulmans, nous aident à grandir dans l’amour pour le Dieu Très Haut et Miséricordieux et, dans un amour fraternel les uns pour les autres. Je vous remercie de votre accueil. Merci aussi pour votre attention. Que Dieu comble vos Majestés de bonheur et leur accorde une longue vie ! Qu’il bénisse la Jordanie par la prospérité et la paix !

Majestäten, Exzellenzen, liebe Mitbrüder im Bischofsamt, liebe Freunde,

Mit Freude grüße ich alle, die zu Beginn meines ersten Besuches im Nahen Osten seit meiner Wahl auf den Stuhl Petri hierher gekommen sind. Ich freue mich, den Boden des Haschemitischen Königreichs Jordanien zu betreten, eines Landes, das so reich an Geschichte ist, Heimat so vieler antiker Kulturen und tief geprägt von religiöser Bedeutung für Juden, Christen und Muslime. Ich danke Seiner Majestät König Abdullah II. für seine freundlichen Worte der Begrüßung und spreche ihm meinen besonderen Glückwunsch in diesem Jahr zum zehnten Jahrestag seiner Thronbesteigung aus. In meinen Gruß an Seine Majestät schließe ich von Herzen gute Wünsche für alle Mitglieder der königlichen Familie und der Regierung, wie auch für alle Bewohner des Königreiches ein. Ich grüße die anwesenden Bischöfe, besonders die Mitbrüder mit seelsorglichen Aufgaben in Jordanien. Ich freue mich, mit Ihnen; verehrte Bischöfe, und mit zahlreichen Ihrer Sorge anvertrauten Gläubigen morgen abend in der Sankt-Georgs-Kathedrale und am Sonntag im Internationalen Stadion Gottesdienst zu feiern.

Ich komme als Pilger nach Jordanien, um die heiligen Stätten zu verehren, die eine solch bedeutende Rolle bei einigen zentralen Ereignissen der biblischen Geschichte gespielt haben. Am Berg Nebo führte Mose sein Volk bis in die Sichtweite des Landes, das ihre Heimat werden sollte; hier starb er und wurde er begraben. In Betanien auf der anderen Seite des Jordan predigte Johannes der Täufer und gab Zeugnis für Jesus, den er im Wasser jenes Flusses taufte, der diesem Land seinen Namen gibt. In den kommenden Tagen werde ich diese beiden heiligen Orte besuchen, und es wird mir eine Freude sein, die Grundsteine von Kirchen zu segnen, die am traditionellen Ort der Taufe Jesu errichtet werden sollen. Es ist ein Zeichen des Respekts dieses Landes für die verschiedenen Religionen, daß die katholische Gemeinschaft Jordaniens die Möglichkeit hat, öffentliche Gottesdienststätten zu errichten. In ihrem Namen möchte ich zum Ausdruck bringen, wie sehr diese Offenheit gewürdigt wird. Religionsfreiheit ist in der Tat ein grundlegendes Menschenrecht, und es ist meine inständige Hoffnung und mein Gebet, daß die Wertschätzung für die unveräußerlichen Rechte und die Würde jedes Menschen zunehmend anerkannt und verteidigt werden – nicht nur im Nahen Osten, sondern in jedem Teil der Welt.

Mein Besuch in Jordanien gibt mir eine gute Gelegenheit, von meinen tiefen Respekt gegenüber der muslimischen Gemeinschaft zu sprechen und der führenden Rolle Anerkennung zu zollen, die Seine Königliche Majestät bei der Förderung eines besseren Verständnisses der vom Islam verkündeten Tugenden gezeigt hat. Nachdem einige Jahre seit der Veröffentlichung der Amman Message und der Amman Interfaith Message vergangen sind, können wir sagen, daß diese verdienstvollen Initiativen viel Gutes bei der Unterstützung einer Allianz der Kulturen zwischen dem Westen und der muslimischen Welt bewirkt haben und damit die Voraussagen jener widerlegt haben, die Gewalttätigkeit und Konflikt als unvermeidlich betrachten. In der Tat steht das Königreich Jordanien schon lange in vorderster Reihe bei den Initiativen zur Förderung des Friedens im Nahen Osten und überall auf der Welt, indem es zum interreligiösen Dialog ermutigt und alle Bemühungen unterstützt, eine gerechte Lösung des israelisch-palästinensischen Konfliktes zu finden, indem es Flüchtlinge aus dem benachbarten Irak aufnimmt und den Extremismus niederzuhalten trachtet. Ich möchte diese Gelegenheit nicht vorübergehen lassen, ohne der Pionierleistung des verstorbenen Königs Hussein für den Frieden in der Region zu gedenken. Wie angebracht ist es, daß meine Begegnung morgen mit den muslimischen geistlichen Führern, mit dem diplomatischen Corps und den Rektoren der Universitäten in der nach ihm benannten Moschee stattfinden wird. Möge sein Engagement für eine Lösung der Konflikte der Region weiterhin Frucht bringen bei den Anstrengungen zur Förderung eines dauerhaften Friedens und einer authentischen Gerechtigkeit, die allen im Nahen Osten Lebenden zugute kommt.

Liebe Freunde, bei dem Seminar des Katholisch-Muslimischen Forums in Rom im vergangenen Herbst, haben die Teilnehmer die zentrale Rolle diskutiert, die in unseren jeweiligen religiösen Traditionen das Gebot der Liebe einnimmt. Ich hoffe sehr, daß dieser Besuch und wahrlich alle Initiativen, die geplant sind, um gute Beziehungen zwischen Christen und Muslimen zu fördern, uns helfen, in der Liebe zum allmächtigen und barmherzigen Gott und in brüderlicher Liebe für einander zu wachsen. Danke für Ihren freundlichen Empfang. Danke für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit. Möge Gott Ihren Majestäten Glück und langes Leben gewähren! Möge Er Jordanien mit Wohlergehen und Frieden segnen!

Maestà, Eccellenze, Cari Fratelli Vescovi, Cari Amici,

è con gioia che saluto tutti voi qui presenti, mentre inizio la mia prima visita in Medio Oriente dalla mia elezione alla Sede Apostolica, e sono lieto di posare i piedi sul suolo del Regno Ascemita di Giordania, una terra tanto ricca di storia, patria di così numerose antiche civiltà, e profondamente intrisa di significato religioso per Ebrei, Cristiani e Musulmani. Ringrazio Sua Maestà il re Abdullah II per le sue cortesi parole di benvenuto e Gli porgo le mie particolari congratulazioni in questo anno che segna il decimo anniversario della sua ascesa al trono. Nel salutare Sua Maestà, estendo di cuore i migliori auguri a tutti i membri della Famiglia Reale e del Governo, e a tutto il popolo del Regno. Saluto Sua Beatitudine Fouad Twal e Sua Beatitudine Theophilo III ed anche gli altri Patriarchi e Vescovi qui presenti, specialmente quelli con responsabilità pastorali in Giordania. Mi dispongo con gioia a celebrare la liturgia nella Cattedrale di San Giorgio domani sera e nello Stadio Internazionale domenica insieme con Voi, cari Vescovi, e con così numerosi fedeli affidati alla vostra cura pastorale.

Sono venuto in Giordania come pellegrino, per venerare i luoghi santi che hanno giocato una così importante parte in alcuni degli eventi chiave della storia Biblica. Sul Monte Nebo, Mosè condusse la sua gente per gettare lo sguardo entro la terra che sarebbe diventata la loro casa, e qui morì e fu sepolto. A Betania al di là del Giordano, Giovanni Battista predicò e rese testimonianza a Gesù, che egli stesso battezzò nelle acque del fiume che dà a questa terra il nome. Nei prossimi giorni visiterò entrambi questi luoghi santi e avrò la gioia di benedire le prime pietre delle chiese che saranno costruite sul luogo tradizionale del Battesimo del Signore. La possibilità che la comunità cattolica di Giordania possa edificare pubblici luoghi di culto è un segno del rispetto di questo Paese per la religione e a nome dei Cattolici desidero esprimere quanto sia apprezzata questa apertura. La libertà religiosa è certamente un diritto umano fondamentale ed è mia fervida speranza e preghiera che il rispetto per tutti i diritti inalienabili e la dignità di ogni uomo e di ogni donna giunga ad essere sempre più affermato e difeso, non solo nel Medio Oriente, ma in ogni parte del mondo.

La mia visita in Giordania mi offre la gradita opportunità di esprimere il mio profondo rispetto per la comunità Musulmana e di rendere omaggio al ruolo di guida svolto da Sua Maestà il Re nel promuovere una migliore comprensione delle virtù proclamate dall’Islam. Ora che sono passati alcuni anni dalla pubblicazione del Messaggio di Amman e del Messaggio Interreligioso di Amman, possiamo dire che queste nobili iniziative hanno ottenuto buoni risultati nel favorire un’alleanza di civiltà tra il mondo Occidentale e quello Musulmano, smentendo le predizioni di coloro che considerano inevitabili la violenza e il conflitto. In effetti, il Regno di Giordania è da tempo in prima linea nelle iniziative volte a promuovere la pace nel Medio Oriente e nel mondo, incoraggiando il dialogo inter-religioso, sostenendo gli sforzi per trovare una giusta soluzione al conflitto Israeliano-Palestinese, accogliendo i rifugiati dal vicino Iraq, e cercando di tenere a freno l’estremismo. Non posso lasciare passare questa opportunità senza richiamare alla mente gli sforzi d’avanguardia a favore della pace nella regione fatti dal precedente re Hussein. Come appare opportuno che il mio incontro di domani con i leader religiosi musulmani, il corpo diplomatico e i rettori dell’Università abbia luogo nella moschea che porta il suo nome. Possa il suo impegno per la soluzione dei conflitti della regione continuare a portar frutto nello sforzo di promuovere una pace durevole e una vera giustizia per tutti coloro che vivono nel Medio Oriente.

Cari Amici, nel Seminario tenutosi a Roma lo scorso autunno presso il Foro Cattolico-Musulmano, i partecipanti hanno esaminato il ruolo centrale svolto, nelle nostre rispettive tradizioni religiose, dal comandamento dell’amore. Spero vivamente che questa visita e in realtà tutte le iniziative programmate per promuovere buone relazioni tra Cristiani e Musulmani, possano aiutarci a crescere nell’amore verso Dio Onnipotente e Misericordioso, come anche nel fraterno amore vicendevole. Grazie per la vostra accoglienza, Grazie per la vostra cortesia. Che Dio conceda alle loro Maestà felicità e lunga vita! Che Egli benedica la Giordania con la prosperità e la pace!
